Security Guards Should Be Paid More!
If there is one thing that we disagree with as we created this page – it is how little security guards get paid in America. Even in some of the most crime filled places – sometimes a security guard’s annual pay is just barely over the poverty line.
Considering that a security guard can quickly encounter a violent and dangerous situation during the course of their line of duty, it just seems like they should be paid more. Although, we did notice (as you can see from the pay scales below) that the more populated states do pay more than some of the less populated states.
Or, is it a matter of crime and the demand for higher security that drives the pay scale? As you can see, Washington DC shells out the most in regards to security officer pay.
Is this because there is more crime there – or is it just because there are more “high-profile” and V.I.P types of people in that city? Who knows what really drives the salaries on the page below.
However, one thing we also noticed is that different levels and positions or titles within this career field do get better pay rates. This means that if you keep your nose clean and further your education – you could earn $35K to $45K per year in a supervisory position.
Are Google’s Security Guards Under Paid?
Instead of using third-party contracting services, Google will hire more than 200 security guards and give them the same benefits and perks as other Google employees, including retirement benefits, health insurance and parental leave, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Google will continue using current security contractor, Security Industry Specialists, Inc., as the company transitions into building its in-house security force.
The move follows wage disputes in Silicon Valley, most notably among the tech industry’s invisible workforce — the cooks, janitors and security officers who help keep the businesses humming.
Many tech companies, including Apple, use contracting companies that provide security and cleaning services that don’t pay workers enough to live in surrounding area — even though they make up a sizable chunk of the workforce.
There are upwards of 3,000 security guards working in Silicon Valley who make around $14 an hour on average. But a family of four with two working adults needs to make at self-sufficiency standard of about $19 per hour.
